Our Story
Mike and Julie, born and raised in Sheboygan, WI and Brown Deer, WI respectively, moved to the Twin Cities in the early 90’s. They had long dreamed of having a place of their own back in their home state where they could enjoy the outdoors with friends and family. In the early 2000's, they found the perfect piece of land in Maiden Rock and relocated a set of cedar logs that once formed a cabin in Egg Harbor, WI.
Over the years they raised three kids and spent countless hours gardening, beekeeping, hunting, fishing, making maple syrup and growing together as a family on their bluff overlooking Lake Pepin. One dream that still remained: to create a place in town that would bring people together in a unique and meaningful way.
The Merc is just that - a place to gather, connect, and celebrate community—and they couldn’t be more excited to see this dream come to life.
Our Mission
Exchanging Goods and Good Times
Our brick and mortar store, built during Maiden Rock’s heyday and meticulously renovated, is complemented by an easy-to-use online platform for both craft sellers and buyers. The site features high-quality local products that can be shipped directly to you or picked up at the Merc. Talented craftspeople excel in their areas of expertise but often need a way to market and deliver their products efficiently. At The Merc, local artisans can choose to sell and ship through our online store or meet their customers in person for a gourmet cup of coffee and bite to eat.
Historical Roots
At the turn of the 20th century, Maiden Rock was a vibrant river town, home to a grand hotel that offered food, lodging and entertainment for visitors. In addition to farming, the area boasted a variety of skilled tradespeople who provided both locals and tourists with a wide range of goods. As river travel declined and larger metropolitan cities grew, towns like Maiden Rock saw less attention, and many of its craftspeople struggled to survive. Today, there is a resurgence of artisan producers, and the craftsmanship and quality of their work is exceptional.

The Craft
The products whose reputation stand the test of time are often the result of a deep passion for quality, crafted with meticulous care and honed skill. At the Merc, we celebrate this dedication to craftsmanship by showcasing a variety of locally made goods that reflect the highest standards of artistry and tradition. From quilts and paintings, to produce woodworking and metal work, our selection highlights the incredible talent within our community.
